Rolling Rolling Rolling, review

Derma rolling?  What is that? Yup, that was me until not very long ago.  In fact when those pictures come up on my social media news feed of people that had gone to an esthetician  or dermatologist and there face is bright red and raw, it gave me the heeby jeebies.

I’m totally honest, when I got my consultant box of products I took one look at this little device and said H to the L no!! This was not for me, I mean I didn’t even wash my face regularly until a few weeks ago. Well fast forward a year and I finally plucked up the courage to try this little thing, and all I can say is, I’m addicted!

What is a derma-roller?
A derma-roller is a micro-exfoliating tool first developed for use in dermatologists offices. It gently conditions the skin, which makes the products applied afterward more effective.

Why should I use a derma-roller?
With regular use of a derma-roller, you will see better, faster results from your skincare products.

How does it work?

By rolling the teeny tiny needles across your face, neck and decolletage (your chest) it punctures micrscopic holes in the surface of your skin.  These tiny holes left by the roller cause your body to naturally heal itself and create more collagen and elastin.  Which is important because collagen is what makes our skin tough, while elastin allows our skin to stretch and bounce back.   Together, collagen and elastin keep connective tissue firm and help it to hold its shape. As your skin loses collagen, it loses elasticity and, on average, we lose about 1% of our collagen every year after the age of 20!

The more collagen we lose, the more fine lines and wrinkles appear, which is why this handy dandy tool is so helpful at working to increase our collagen and elastin levels as we age.

As an added bonus, any products we put on our skin after rolling means they can travel through these teeny tiny holes and reach the lower layers of our skin and work their magic at an even deeper level.  As I got RF’s  AMP MD system it came with a jar of Intensive Renewing Serum capsules.  These individual capsules of super serum are packed with a product I’d never used before or even heard of retinAl.  The doctors took retinol and then turbo charged it with more Vitamin A and created a molecule that was more stable and was gentle enough for even the most sensitive of skin.  From personal experience, I had tried to retinol based products and my skin had a horrible reaction, like hives, so not attractive or pleasant.  As I always inevitably do I used myself as a guinea pig and gave this new super serum a go and boom!  My skin felt super silky and smooth and my hubby couldn’t stop stroking my face and neither could I (is that weird?  I’m not sure but i don’t care because my face felt so smooth…like a baby’s bum).  And thanks to using the roller before hand, this super serum even deeper into my skin to work its magic.

Before:  At first glance my face looks fine, but take a closer look.  Grooves on my forehead, uneven skin tone and dull looking skin.

What does it feel like?
It might seem intimidating your first few times (I can attest to that as I have sensitive skin and was a little hesitant and I mean, I let the roller sit in its box for a year before I finally gave it a try), but derma-rolling is surprisingly comfortable (I’d say even therapeutic). The sensation is like a slightly tingly massage for the skin and far less painful than getting my legs waxed.

How do you incorporate a derma-roller into your skincare routine?

Step 1 – REDEFINE Kaolin Clay Face Mask

Step 2 – REDEFINE Pore Minimizing Toner

Step 3 – MD Roller

  1. Start with a clean and dry face.  I personally use the Rodan and Fields REDEFINE regimen for my every day face washing.
  2. Gently roll the AMP MD Skincare roller from side to side on your forehead.

Step 4 – RetinAl, so silky

  3. Next, gently roll it up and down on one side of the face, and then the next.
  4. Use the roller on one section of the face at a time starting with your forehead, then the left and right side of your face, your chin, and down your neck. When rolling it, make sure to go up and down, side to side, and then diagonal. You want to do this treatment a couple of times per week, working up to every night.
  5. Follow up by applying the REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum for smoother feeling, younger looking skin thanks to the RetinAl and peptides.
  6. Finally apply your favourite moisturiser.

After: I loved how my skin looked and felt.  A smoother looking, more even skin tone and those pesky forehead lines are appearing less defined.
